Ski route with history on the Wallberg

Skiroute

A few decades ago, the Wallberg was a popular ski resort for Munich locals. At the top, a few drag lifts whirred and people skied at a leisurely pace before plunging down the notorious Glaslhang and taking a daring shot down the cannon barrel.

To this day, the legendary Olympic ski champion Toni Sailer, also known as "The Black Lightning of Kitz", holds the course record. He won the "Golden Shield of the Wallberg" in 1954 with a time of 2:22.7 minutes - and his best time has never been beaten.

Insider tip

The ski lifts ceased operating long ago, but the Wallberg is still an attraction for experienced skiers and snowboarders today: the ski route over the Erlen- and Glaslhang, formerly a "black" groomed run and FIS route, has now become an insider tip for freeriders and deep snow fans. However, the 3.2-kilometre-long descent is really only recommended for very good skiers. Beginners and intermediates are quickly overwhelmed here and personal responsibility is required.

There is a so-called VS check station at the Wallberg mountain station. Tourers and freeriders can check the functionality of their avalanche transceivers ("beepers") on the board. The avalanche transceiver alone is no protection against avalanches. Emergency equipment with a shovel, probe and first aid kit must be part of the standard equipment of every freerider and ski tourer.

The descent is closed in case of avalanche danger. The Bavarian Avalanche Wall Service provides up-to-date information on the avalanche situation.
